Teen Track

Unfortunately, the SciPy Teen Track has been cancelled. We look forward to hosting the teen Track at SciPy 2021.

Come learn more about the intersection of Science and Technology

SciPy (Scientific Computing with Python) is excited to once again offer our Teen Track, July 6-7.  If you are 14-18 years old, please join us to learn more about the Python language and how developers solve real world scientific problems using Python and its scientific libraries.

Day 1

July 6th, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

The day begins with an introduction to SciPy analysis and visualization tools by exploring a data set within a Jupyter notebook.  If you don’t know what this means yet, don’t worry—we will explain!

We will cover basics of Python and NumPy and matplotlib. The afternoon includes presentations by scientists in different fields who will describe how they use Python and other languages to gather data, gain insights, and solve problems. The afternoon closes with a mini-project.

Day 2

July 7th, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

In the morning, we will take a field trip to the Texas Advanced Computing Center Visualization Lab (on the University of Texas Campus).  The Vislab is a showcase of the technologies that are used to support researchers as they turn their simulations into visually appealing, scientifically significant images. We will have the opportunity for hands-on interaction with Lasso, a multi-touch screen, and see Stallion, the world's highest resolution tiled wall.

We will return to the AT&T Center for lunch and  additional presentations by scientists in different fields. The day wraps up with the completion of the mini-projects.

Things you need to know

Prerequisites

The class expects that you understand some basic programming concepts like variables, loops, and if/else statements. If you do not have any experience, but would like to attend, please contact us at s[email protected]. There are tutorials on Codecademy that you can complete and will get you up to speed for the class.

If you are a programming whiz, already understanding topics such as decorators or NumPy arrays, or can do image processing or create your own visualizations, you may want to consider registering for our general tutorials.

    •    Where: AT&T Executive Conference Center, 1900 University Ave, Austin, TX 78705

    •    Cost: $50 for the two day session. Includes breakfast, lunch and snacks.
